Specimen from an Angular World
Friday, May 28th, 2010
My new piece Specimen from an Angular World is coming along and I’m very happy with it!
I’m playing with the juxtaposition of organic, curved botanical forms with sharp, angular shapes. I want the piece to have enough organic shape to read as botanical, yet with enough angular shapes to say it’s from an angular world. The fruits are curved on the stem side and square at the other. Although the leaves have the details of real leaves, they are pointed triangles.
My photos show the piece in process. I make all the parts first – fruits, leaves, and vines. Then I lay out the parts to see how the piece might look once complete, as you can see in the photo at the top of this post. In the final photo, I have attached the first few buds and leaves to the vines. The final touch will be the roots, which will be square.

I will donate this piece to the upcoming Tacoma Museum of Glass Red Hot 2010 party and auction. Donating my piece enters it in the competition in conjunction with the auction. Wish me luck!
